New Year's resolutions, with a plan

Make 2027count

Resolutions usually fade because they're too big and too vague. Here's a simple way to set goals you'll still be working on in December, and a free app that does the remembering for you.

81days until 2027

Five steps to resolutionsthat last

  1. 1

Pick a few, not ten. One goal per area of your life that matters this year is plenty. Health, career, a person, a skill, money: choose the ones you'd be proud of in December.

  2. 2

Choose how you'll track each one. Some goals are steps to finish, like a race or a trip. Some are habits, like reading or calling home. Some are a number to reach by a date. Tracking each the right way is half the battle.

  3. 3

Make the first step tiny. Start so small it feels effortless: sign up for the 5K, book the first lesson, open the savings account. Momentum beats motivation.

  4. 4

Keep Today's Three in front of you. Each night, pick up to three things you want to improve tomorrow, and keep them on your Lock Screen so they're the first thing you see.

  5. 5

Reflect, and change course without guilt. Every week or two, write a line about how each goal is going. Some goals will turn out not to matter, and moving on from those is progress too.
